The Review 📚

The Title/Cover Draw:

  • One of my most anticipated reads for 2021 after I read Truly Devious last year! I couldn’t wait to crack this open!

💜 What I liked:

  • I love the camp setting, which really made me miss camp in general. Despite the murder scene, I wanted to be whisked away here. This book was fast paced and such a good time! Maureen Johnsons can definitely craft some clues and lead you on a mystery journey.

😱 What I didn’t like:

  • I would have said that I wish we could have seen more of the characters from the first 3 books – But it makes sense given the setting. My biggest gripe is the relationship between Stevie and David. I really don’t see the connection there and he’s kind of a jerk sometimes. I’m not sure what is missing, but there is something.

💁‍♀️ The Characters:

  • Stevie is asked to sold a decades old murder at a camp and can bring along her friends Janelle and Nick!

🚦 My face at the end: 🤓

💭 5 Reasons to Read:

  1. Fast paced mystery
  2. Idyllic setting (perfect for summer).
  3. Familiar characters from the previous books
  4. Keeps you guessing
  5. This book….IS PURPLE!

🕧 Mini-Summary:

  • 4 teenagers died in the forest supposedly because of marijuana, but over 30 years later, Stevie Bell is on the case!

All thoughts and opinions are my own.

📘 Summary 📚 The Box in the Woods

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.
