The Review

Harry is now a criminal. Sort of. He robbed Marcone, and while the police don’t have the best evidence it was him, they have suspicion, and they are on him and Murphy like white on rice. Good thing his apprentice, now Winter Lady, is letting him crash at her apartment. Yeah, it’s technically on Svartalf territory, but no place is perfect. It’s safe, especially for his two little girls.

Oh, yeah, that’s gonna last a hot minute. There’s now going to be a summit held for the signatories of the Unseelie Accords, the UN of the supernatural world. It’s being held at Marcone’s new castle, and everyone who is someone in the Nevernever is going to be there. The topic: The rising threat of the Fomore, previously held in check by the Red Court Vampires that Dresden eradicated in one move during Changes.

And then Thomas gets implicated in an assasination attempt against the Svartalf king.

And Dresden has to rescue him because of magical contracts. While being Winter Knight and a White Council Warden at the same time.

And the Fomore show up. And. And. And.

This book is a lot like other Dresden Files stories. Coming off the heels of Skin Game, though, it feels a little lacking. It’s good, but it isn’t as fun as Skin Game or even Cold Days. This is one of those sad, angry trips through a series of bad situations that made the series famous. The amount of world altering, life altering stuff that goes down in this book isn’t as much as Changes, but it’s headed that direction. The next book, Battle Ground, looks to be a doozy.

Consider if you like :

If you’re all grown up and ready for darker, more mature content, but also loved Harry Potter, give the other magical Harry a try.

Summary:

When the Supernatural nations of the world meet up to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities, Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, joins the White Council’s security team to make sure the talks stay civil. But can he succeed, when dark political manipulations threaten the very existence of Chicago–and all he holds dear?

I voluntarily read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
