The Review:

Of all the worlds crafted by Seanan McGuire for the Wayward Children, I feel almost frightened to say that The Moors call to me. A realm of mad science, of classic movie monsters and unknowable drowned gods. It strangely makes sense.

Oh, hey, we’re back at the Moors. Lucky me! Jack returns to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children, unconscious in the arms of her reanimated beloved Alexis. Except, it’s not Jack. But it is. Jill used the lightning science of the Moors to switch bodies with Jack, and now plans to use Jack’s still-normal-living body to become a vampire. Make sense? The re-animated can’t be undead-ified because they’re already dead but alive. Crap, I’m talking like Sumi.

I’ve seen a lot of people giving Come Tumbling Down a less stellar review than the rest of the series, saying it isn’t necessary. Certainly, Jack didn’t actually need the whole team for this quest, but the adventures and settings aren’t really what this series is about. This is about the characters.

Think about this, we finally got an entire book with Sumi without her being dead. It was amazing. Christopher walked into another world where he could possibly be at ease, and had to struggle with that. Cora… Well Cora just bugged me. I like her character concept, but she’s too whiny and haughty to be someone I want to see very much more of.

I feel like this will be the last time we see Jack, Jill, and Alexis. Their stories have reached a satisfying and logical conclusion, and they will likely be able to find rest now. Well, as much rest as you can in the Moors.

Summary:

When Jack left Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister–whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice–back to their home on the Moors.

But death in their adopted world isn’t always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her. Something terrible. Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive. Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome.

Eleanor West’s “No Quests” rule is about to be broken.
