The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson Book Review

It’s Novel Nerd!

The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson _ Zainey Laney

This is the story of Rapunzel, But you have never hear it like this before. However, Rapunzel has lived alone with her mother all her life. While her mother provides for her, she forbids her to read or meet men.

When Rapunzel meets Sir Gerek, both of those rules are broken. Rapunzel finds the strength to find work at the castle and in so doing discovers the real truth of who she is.

I thoroughly enjoyed this spin on the story. The characters were deep and the story kept moving at a good pace. If you like period dramas, especially with a familiar theme, I recommend this one for sure!

The Golden Braid is available on AMAZON in kindle, audible, MP3, and hardcover formats. Not currently available on available on Google Play.

Available: Nov 17

Press Summary:

The one who needs rescuing isn’t always the one in the tower…

Rapunzel can throw a knife better than any man. She paints beautiful flowering vines on the walls of her plaster houses. She sings so sweetly she can coax even a beast to sleep. But there are two things she is afraid her mother might never allow her to do: learn to read and marry.

Fiercely devoted to Rapunzel, her mother is suspicious of every man who so much as looks at her daughter and warns her that no man can be trusted. After a young village farmer asks for Rapunzel’s hand in marriage, Mother decides to move them once again—this time, to the large city of Hagenheim.

The journey proves treacherous, and after being rescued by a knight—Sir Gerek—Rapunzel, in turn, rescues him farther down the road. As a result, Sir Gerek agrees to repay his debt to Rapunzel by teaching her to read. Could there be more to him than his arrogance and desire to marry for riches and position?

As Rapunzel acclimates to life in a new city, she uncovers a mystery that will forever change her life. In this Rapunzel story unlike any other, a world of secrets and treachery are about to be revealed after seventeen years. How will Rapunzel finally take control of her own destiny? And who will prove faithful to a lowly peasant girl with no one to turn to?

Panda Planner Review

Panda Planner Review _ Zainey Laney

I have been using a variety of Planners: Kikki K, Mambi, Erin Condren. Each has a specific purpose and organization method. Panda Planner is a different approach. First off, it comes with a web address so you can sign up to receive videos on productivity. This is good if you are not sure the best way to use the planner.

The planner itself is divided into 3 sections, Monthly, Weekly, and Daily. The monthly section has space for each day in the month, a side section for notes, and a section at the bottom. In that section, you can plan you goals and how you will succeed. There is also a space for reviewing how you succeeded at your goals. There is also a line at the top to put your habit and focus for the month. There are only enough for 6 months of information so to me this is not as good because you will have to purchase another one of these in 6 months if you like to use it.

Week view Panda Planner _ Zainey Laney

The Weekly section has a variety of different sections. You can use these to record Bog Wins, How to Improve, Things I will do to Make this week great, I’m looking forward to, Habits I am focusing on developing, Education/ Mastery, Affirmation, top goals this week, and 4 big spaces for listing all your projects. This really gets into the depth of planning specifically. There are enough for 20 weeks, so you won’t have enough weekly spots to fill what you would get to match the 6 months in the previous section. To me this is definitely a drawback as there should be 4 more weeks.

Day View Panda Planner _ Zainey Laney

Lastly is the daily section. Here you can track what you are grateful for, looking to why it will be great, affirmations, focus, exercise, priorities, schedule, tasks, notes, and a space where you can review the days wins and improvements. I like how detailed this section is, but I am not sure I could use every section everyday. From the amount of pages, there seems to be enough daily entries for 2 and a half months. For me, this is not enough because in order to get into a habit, you should do it for 28 days. However, this is good for having the ability to do it a few times a week if you want it for that.

In order to keep track of the sections, there are ribbons to place where your leave off. I think this is a great idea instead of tabs! The leather book is held closed with an elastic band and it is the perfect size to fit in your purse or bag.

Overall, I really like the concept of this planner, It has options for everything you may want to do, and keep track of. I like the positivity of it as well. I realize that this planner would have to be huge in order to make every section have enough for 6 months, but that might be a good thing. It seems like almost a mishap that there are not enough pages in it.

You can purchase this planner on AMAZON!

Sleuth’s Dinner Theater Travel Review – Orlando, FL

This review was done by Marshall (AKA The One True Hazard)

Sleauths _ Zainey Laney

As a celebration of October, the Month of Two Birthdays around our household, we managed to wrangle a few seats over at the I-Drive area’s famous Sleuths Dinner Theater. I-Drive is well known for the sheer number of dinner theater concepts that have sprung up around there, and we have seen most of them. Medieval Times, Arabian Nights, and Pirates come to mind. They all run off a similar formula. Gather everyone together in a waiting area/bar/gift shop until show time, then wrangle them into the show area and give them chunks of the show while they eat their dinner.

Sleauths Gift Shop _ Zainey Laney

Sleuths is the same kind of concept, but instead of a high-action stunt show in a massive amphitheater, you have a more intimate theater gathered near a small stage. The show is, as the name would suggest, a mystery for the audience to solve. There are many different shows available at Sleuths, so even if you go multiple times, you’ll get a different experience. Because of the smaller theater, and the type of show that it is, much of the performance is not only interactive with the audience, but improvised a bit.
Sleauths Bar _ Zainey Laney
We enjoyed the show. It was lots of fun. I don’t really want to ruin the show for you, so I won’t really get into the nitty-gritty details, but ours was a murder mystery at the Squire’s Inn in England. The characters were off the wall, and the actors really got into them. After seeing things unfold up until the murder, we received the main portion of the meal. After that, we got to question the suspects, which was lots of fun. This is where the actors could really show off their improv skills, as they would not only respond entirely in character, but could easily segue weird questions into the pre-scripted, multi-character scenes that would reveal content. Then, we got dessert, followed by accusations.
Sleuths Stage _ Zainey Laney
This was where the show fell a bit flat. As someone who was raised watching Poirot and other Agatha Christie mysteries on PBS, the final result was… unsatisfying. As the only piece of definite evidence as to whodunnit was left until the end to be revealed, it could literally be ANY of the suspects right up until the reveal. The suspects all have a motive, and no alibi. It feels as if they could change the ending right there with a quick whisper behind stage and nobody would be the wiser. That grinds my gears. This could have just been the Squire’s Inn story that did this, but I have no way of knowing.
So, after a full discussion of the show, lets move on to the consumables. The bar has a full assortment of drinks, and several house drinks that looked very good. There was a chocolate mint drink that was very tasty. Once you get into the show, you have unlimited soda, beer, and wine. The lasagna was much better than the food we’ve had at other dinner theaters, and Vince’s steak seemed to meet his expectations. Deserts were a bit of a let down, as the chocolate cake was dry and dense.
Sleuths Dinner _ Zainey Laney
All in all, Sleuth’s is a fun experience, but I would only go again if I could get a discount. At the price, its food is in need of a little upgrade. The show was entertaining, and a good way to spend an evening with friends. I would like to see if all the other shows have the same lackluster ending, but take this bit of advice: think of this less as a mystery show, and more of a comedy. You’ll enjoy it better.

Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl Book Review

Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl Book Review _ Zainey Laney

It’s Novel Nerd!

Today I am reviewing Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl. This looks to be book 3 in the series “Finding Sanctuary.” Sophie is a reporter for a big city newspaper who is chasing a decade old thief to a Mennonite city. Her past is catching up with her as she finds her childhood crush lives there. Seeing him reminds her of the hurtful past she wants to forget. Will she find the criminal and write her story? Will her childhood crush help heal her past?

This book was very much under the thriller/suspense genre. It was well written with complex characters and a plot twist I did not see coming (and I see them pretty far away). If you are looking for a good read that is rivoting, this is definitely a read for you. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s is not a book about evil or eclipses.

Rising Darkness is available on AMAZON in paperback, kindle, and hardcover formats. Not available on Google Play at this time.

Release date: November 3

Press Summary:

Sophie Wittenbauer left her strict Mennonite hometown under a cloud of shame and regret. Certain she’s left her past far behind her, she’s now focused on her job at a newspaper and is shocked when she stumbles upon the name of someone she knew in her old life. But when she learns the man–a prisoner–claims a suspect from a decades-old unsolved crime is hiding out in the small town of Sanctuary, Missouri, she can’t resist following the lead in hopes of furthering her career.

Almost immediately upon her arrival, Sophie’s confronted with a face from her past and fears her intention of using a false identity to investigate is doomed. But with the help of Sanctuary’s charismatic young pastor, Sophie knows she’s getting close. Will she be able to conceal the truth of her own past long enough to find the suspect before someone puts a stop–fatal or otherwise–to her investigation?

Makeup Remover from Miss Landson Review

I recently got a chance to use a product I had been wanting to try for awhile.

Makeup Remover Cloth _ Zainey Laney

Many people in the beauty community has raved about this product or a similar one. The basic idea is to use the product to wipe the makeup off your skin without washing. I was really skeptical because in order to get off my makeup, I need to use makeup remover, argan oil, and a variety of other things. Still my waterproof mascara stays until the morning no matter what I do.

Let me tell you, this product actually worked. No joke, you just rub it across your face and it takes it off! The simply wash the product and you are good to go again. The product says you can use it thousands of times before it is done. I have not used it that many time so I can not voucher for that. But it does work!

The Good Neighbor Review + Giveaway

It’s Novel Nerd! Plus a Giveaway! Read to the end to find out how to get your own copy! Plus look for a new Book Review on Mondays.

frc-logo

This is the second book I am reading for BookSparks U. If you missed the first one, Big Law by Lucy Cameron, make sure you check it out!

The Good Neighbor by AJ Banner _ Zainey Laney

The Good Neighbor by A.J. Banner is classified under the suspense thriller genre. I reminded me a lot of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, but shorter. If you are a fan of the type of books that keep you guessing, this will be up your alley.

Sarah lives a perfect life as a small town writer in beautiful Washington, and is still a newlywed to Dr. Johnny. However, one night a fire reveals the dangers of living in a small town.

Like I said, this book was a really fast read both in length and how it keeps you reading. My complaint is that the characters were not written as complex and deep enough as they could have been. While I did kind of root for the heroine, I did not fall in love with the protanganist enough to want to read a sequel. However, if you are looking for a book to read for enjoyment, this is an excellent read.

The Good Neighbor is available on AMAZON in paperbakc, audible, MP3 CD, and ebook formats. Not available on Google Play at this time.

Release date: September 1

Press Summary:

Named by Harper’s Bazaar as a book that could be the next Gone Girl.

From a phenomenal new voice in suspense fiction comes a book that will forever change the way you look at the people closest to you…

Shadow Cove, Washington, is the kind of town everyone dreams about—quaint streets, lush forests, good neighbors. Mini Book Reviews- What I read this month

It’s Novel Nerd!

Sometimes I do full reviews of books, but this time I have been reading so many, that I decided to do one post with a bunch of different books!

Here is what I have been reading this month:

The Bronte Plot by Katherine Reay _ Zainey Laney

Lucy has been living with a few secrets. Then she meets James and they start dating. James finds out her secrets and cannot deal with the ramifications. Through a chance meeting with James’ grandmother, Lucy discovers that who she is does not have to be based on the past, but can be found in literary England.

This book was an interesting read. The way it was written was at time over descriptive, and since I am sometimes a skimmer, I found myself doing that a few times. However, the plot is solid and if you are a fan of classic Bronte, Austin, and Dickens, you will appreciate this book.

The Bronte Plot is available on AMAZON in ebook and paperback formats. Also available on Google Play.

Release date: Nov 3

Press Summary:

When Lucy’s secret is unearthed, her world begins to crumble. But it may be the best thing that has ever happened to her.

Lucy Alling makes a living selling rare books, often taking suspicious measures to reach her goals. When her unorthodox methods are discovered, Lucy’s secret ruins her relationship with her boss and her boyfriend James—leaving Lucy in a heap of hurt, and trouble. Something has to change; shehas to change.

In a sudden turn of events, James’s wealthy grandmother Helen hires Lucy as a consultant for a London literary and antiques excursion. Lucy reluctantly agrees and soon discovers Helen holds secrets of her own. In fact, Helen understands Lucy’s predicament better than anyone else.

As the two travel across England, Lucy benefits from Helen’s wisdom, as Helen confronts the ghosts of her own past. Everything comes to a head at Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters, where Lucy is reminded of the sisters’ beloved heroines, who, with tenacity and resolution, endured—even in the midst of change.

Now Lucy must go back into her past in order to move forward. And while it may hold mistakes and regrets, she will prevail—if only she can step into the life that’s been waiting for her all along.

Wynn in Doubt by Emily Hemmer _ Zainey Laney

Wynn’s Grandmother has told her stories of her great grandmother, and how she abandoned her child to be a Rum runner.  When Wynn’s grandmother passes, Wynn finds a newspaper clipping that shares that there may be more to the story. Accompanied by her boyfriend Oliver, she starts off to find the real story, and along the way tries to find why she herself has been running.

This book was an interesting read for sure. I loved that the author keeps you reading by revealing information little by little.

Wynn in Doubt is available on AMAZON in ebook and paperback formats.

Release date: Oct 6

Press Summary:

Wynn Jeffries has wanderlust. Unfortunately, her life stalled somewhere between graduating from college and slinging drinks at the local dive bar. Stuck in a one-room apartment with no career, no boyfriend, no…life, she dreams of something more. Something amazing. Something like Oliver Reeves, her high school crush, who’s back in town and reminding Wynn of the way she used to be.

When a forgotten news clipping falls out of a book belonging to Wynn’s grandmother, a well-kept family secret is finally revealed. Is Wynn’s gypsy spirit the result of an overactive imagination, or did she inherit it from a woman so determined to live a big life, she gave up everything to have it?

Together, Wynn and Oliver attempt to put together the missing pieces of her family’s past and unravel the mystery behind her great-grandmother’s disappearance. But after so much time succumbing to fear and regret, can Wynn ditch her safe, routine life for the chance at an extraordinary future?

I will Marry George Clooney by Tracy Bloom _ Zainey Laney

Michelle has never revealed who the father of her daughter is to anyone. One small bet with her basically leads her to promise that she will marry George Clooney in order to keep her from making the same mistakes.

This was a really fun read. While you don’t ever truly believe that she will marry George, the hi jinks that ensue when she tries is very entertaining. This was definitely a must read!

I Will Marry George Clooney is available on AMAZON in ebook and paperback formats.

Release date: Oct 30

Press Summary:

A brand new very funny novel, from the bestselling author of No-One Ever Has Sex on a Tuesday and Single Woman Seeks Revenge.

There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only answer is to marry George Clooney.

For Michelle, that time is now.

Slogging her guts out in a chicken factory, whilst single-handedly bringing up a teenager who hates her, is far from the life that 36-year-old Michelle had planned.

But marrying the most eligible man on the planet by Christmas could change all that, couldn’t it?

Sometimes your only option is to dream the impossible – because you never know where it might take you…

This is a fun, completely fantastical novel featuring George Clooney, and has not been authorised or endorsed by the wondrous man himself.

Death Before Decaf by Caroline Fardig _ Zainey Laney

Those who love a good murder mystery will love this book. Juliet comes back to a cafe she used to work at in college and isn’t there a day when people begin getting killed off. Honestly, I can’t tell you enough that if you love mysteries, you will like this!

Death Before Decaf is available on AMAZON in ebook formats. Also available on Google Play.

Release date: Nov 17

Press Summary:

Perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich and Diane Mott Davidson, Caroline Fardig’s captivating new mystery novel takes readers behind the counter of a seemingly run-of-the-mill coffeehouse . . . where murder is brewing.

After her music career crashes and burns spectacularly, Juliet Langley is forced to turn to the only other business she knows: food service. Unfortunately, bad luck strikes yet again when her two-timing fiancé robs her blind and runs off with her best waitress. Flushing what’s left of her beloved café down the toilet with her failed engagement, Juliet packs up and moves back to her college stomping grounds in Nashville to manage an old friend’s coffeehouse. At first glance, it seems as though nothing’s changed at Java Jive. What could possibly go wrong? Only that the place is hemorrhaging money, the staff is in open revolt, and Juliet finds one unlucky employee dead in the dumpster out back before her first day is even over.

The corpse just so happens to belong to the cook who’d locked horns with Juliet over the finer points of the health code. Unimpressed with her management style, the other disgruntled employees are only too eager to spill the beans about her fiery temper to the detective on the case. Add to the mix a hunky stranger who’s asking way too many questions, and suddenly Juliet finds herself in some very hot water. If she can’t simmer down and sleuth her way to the real killer, she’s going to get burned.

Cinderella Shoes by Shonna Slayton _ Zainey Laney

I have never heard of a tail of Cinderella like this. Kate has been made the keeper of Cinderella’s dresses (ball gown, wedding gown) from the step-sister’s descendants. The shoes have been lost, but Kate believes that if she finds them, she will be able find her lost father. There was a previous book called Cinderella’s Dress which I did not read. There are some references in this book to that but you can still follow it if you haven’t read it.

Cinderella’s Shoes is available on AMAZON in ebook and paperback formats. Also available on Google Play.

Release date: Oct 6

Press Summary:

The war may be over, but Kate Allen’s life is still in upheaval. Not only has she discovered thatCinderella was real, but now she’s been made Keeper of the Wardrobe, her sole responsibility to protect Cinderella’s mystical dresses from the greed of the evil stepsisters’ modern descendants.

But Cinderella’s dresses are just the beginning. It turns out that the priceless glass slippers might actually exist, too, and they could hold the power to reunite lost loved ones like her father—missing in action since World War II ended. As Kate and her boyfriend, Johnny, embark on an adventure from New York to Italy and Poland in search of the mysterious slippers, they will be tested in ways they never imagined.

Because when you harness Cinderella’s magic, danger and evil are sure to follow…

Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss _ Zainey Laney

This is probably my favorite book I have read this month. Dahlia is unemployed, but she has been hired by the family of a dead Roleplayer to find his sword. If you are a fan of online gaming, geek or pop culture, this book is a must read. The characters are vibrant and interesting.

The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss is available on AMAZON in ebook , hardcover, and audible formats. Also available on Google Play.

Release date: Oct 20

Press Summary:

For fans of The Guild, New Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars, or anyone who has ever geeked out about something.

The odds of Dahlia successfully navigating adulthood are 3,720 to 1. But never tell her the odds.

Meet Dahlia Moss, the reigning queen of unfortunate decision-making in the St. Louis area. Unemployed broke, and on her last bowl of ramen, she’s not living her best life. But that’s all about to change.

Before Dahlia can make her life any messier on her own she’s offered a job. A job that she’s woefully under-qualified for. A job that will lead her to a murder, an MMORPG, and possibly a fella (or two?).

Turns out unfortunate decisions abound, and she’s just the girl to deal with them.

So that’s all the books for now. Until next time,

theBalm Meet Matt(e) Palette Review

It’s Palette Play! Make sure you are subscribing to get your palette and makeup reviews every week!

Today I will be talking about one of my favorite makeup brands, theBalm. From the packaging to the quality of the products, I just cannot get enough. Although this particular palette is no longer available, there is a new Meet Matt(e) Nude palette I want to get. This should show you how amazing they are.

theBalm Meet Matte Palette _ Zainey Laney

The names of the shades are apparently after our favorite Matts or Matt next door. Honestly I had a hard time finding a lot of the references from the names, although I believe the first name is a Doctor Who reference. The palette itself is a nice size to fit into your purse or makeup bag. It is cardboard packaging so it is lightweight. The shades are creamy and blendable, although a few are little powdery which you will see in a moment. It comes with a dual ended brush which I don’t really use because it is too hard and stiff. In the new palette, i believe it does not come with a brush and the shadows are larger.

theBalm Meet Matte palette Row 1 _ zainey laney

Let me start off by saying that these shadows will need a primer. I don’t do eyeshadow without a base or primer anyway so this is not a problem for me. The first row of colors are nice neutral shades. Matt Smith (Eleventh Doctor???) is about as light as my skin tone so it would make a great base or foundation color. If you take all 3 colors from the top row, the look they create is very minimalist and netural. Very work appropriate. As you can see above, Matt Ramirez is a little powdery but there was not a whole bunch of fallout.

theBalm Meet Matte Row 2 _ Zainey Laney

The second row has what I consider to be the more adventurous shades for this palette. For my skin tone, Matt Chung became almost invisible but it might look great on other skin tones. Matt Horowitz is one of my favorite shades in the palette, however I had to build it up quite a lot to look so pigmented. It is probably the weakest shade in the palette. Matt McDonald would make an amazing under eye liner color.

theBalm Meet Matte Palette Row 3 _ Zainey Laney

Row three has the most gorgeous color combinations. Matt Patel is probably my most used one because it is gorgeous. It makes a great transition or base color and plays nicely with all the other colors in the palette. Matt Batali is my favorite to use as an accent color. Like Matt Horowitz, Matt Schilling does take a little bit to build up but not as much. However it goes on very well.

I used this palette in my Sound of Music Makeup and A Movie video (which was one of our first!). If you like these kind of videos, make sure to subscribe to our youtube channel. Check it out below:

Thank you for staying with us! What palette should we try next?

Until next time,

Meet my September #ZaineyFriends (Part 3)

When you are part of social media, blogging, or a youtuber, it is very important to be a part of a community and to be sharing content besides your own. In the Geeks & Beauties Google Community that I run, we try very hard to support and encourage each other’s endeavors. One of the ways I personally do this is starting to highlight people people on my blog and youtube channel. Here is part 3 of 3 people who will be featured on my site during the month of September. Starting in October, this will happen weekly.

If you are interested in being featured on my blog or social media, make sure you join Geeks and Beauties and send me a message! (Or visit any of my social media above!)

Our third person for the month of September is Sasha. Here is a little bit about herself:

ProfileAboutMePhotograph

Hi there! My name is Sasha but most people know me as “fizzyfreeze” from YouTube! I created my channel in the hopes of obtaining not only lasting relationships and great networking possibilities but also to help in showing others that there is more to bath and body products than the standard brand name shops that people reach for in their “go to” bath items. I love experimenting with indie and Etsy bath and body product companies to see what else is out there to help crave my love for bath and body products and have found so many great shops through my continued journey. I saw that there seemed to be a lack in videos displaying all of these great shops and wanted to create my own channel in promoting those shops while discussing about a category that I’ve loved since I’ve been a child.
As I continue my path through the YouTube Community, I’ve found myself taking risks and branching out to other categories that I never would have thought my channel would go. I’ve made great friends, great relationships (both friends and companies) and have also found myself more independent and confident in branching my channel into other opportunities as well. Who would have thought a silly little “New Years Resolution” to step out of my comfort zone would bring me to where I am now? I absolutely love creating content for my channel and cannot wait to see what new possibilities and relationships await me around the corner.

During my journey through YouTube, I have created amazing friendships which have branched into communicating outside of the standard laptop and/or desktop screen. A great example of this is in my most recent video post where I unbox a package that my really awesome friend, Dale, had sent me in a box swap I joined for the Geeks & Beauties Google+ Community group. Within this group, we have many collaborations and swaps set up allowing everyone to become involved in building lasting relationships with each other. I absolutely loved all of the items that Dale had sent me within our swap with each other and cannot wait to see what is in store next for our collaborations & swaps within the group!

Feel free to contact Sasha or check out her social media linked below! Show her some love, she has some great content.
